Vancouver-based Her Brothers, made of three brothers, Levi, Josh, and Gabe Penner, plays with a core of sophisticated alt-pop, but on “Stay,” Her Brothers blends the tone of John Waite’s Missing You and contemporary pop-rock. That fusion in “Stay” builds on changes in stylistic choices the band has experimented with on their sophomore album “Tribe” since their entirely self-recorded, self-released, debut album She (2015).

Vancouver-based Her Brothers, made of three brothers, Levi, Josh, and Gabe Penner, plays with a core of sophisticated alt-pop, but on “Stay,” Her Brothers blends the tone of John Waite’s Missing You and contemporary pop-rock. That fusion in “Stay” builds on changes in stylistic choices the band has experimented with since their entirely self-recorded, self-released, debut album She (2015).

“Stay” is an attempted lament of one looking onto another who’s hopes and dreams always feel but an arms length away. It’s not surprising to find a song about empathy and connection on an album about belonging and identity aptly titled Tribe. “So many times for myself I find that I don’t need some answer or to have everything fixed, and I don’t mean I like playing the victim though I’m sure we all do at times. What I’m talking about is the profound connection two people can have when they enter into one another’s pain and loss, whatever that may be,” comments Gabe, the band’s frontman.

The track is a bit of a departure from the bands first two singles as it explores a slower, balladesque tone. Originally production on the song began two years previous and then evolved throughout the seasons as the band played around with it in the studio and then taking on yet another shape when Brent Howard of Randy Bachman played slide guitar on it. Levi remarked that, “Brent literally sat down and Christian Stonehouse our engineer and one of the other producers said, ‘lets just see what he does’ and told him the key and he went for it… and that ended up being the take we used.”

Filmed by Hugh Allen and Kaden Van Buren respectively the video marks the first time the band has introduced a narrative element into one of their music videos. Shot over the better part of three days the video was shot around the bands hometown of Vancouver BC in alleyways, on beaches and downtown.
